OVERVIEW
Founded by Australian business leaders and philanthropists Andrew and Nicola Forrest, Walk Free is an international human rights group working to accelerate the end of all forms of modern slavery. Their approach is to combine research with engagement with political, business, religious and community leaders and direct implementation through civil society partners to drive systems change and dismantle the drivers of modern slavery.
They have three core programs: mainstream modern slavery, make slavery uninvestable, and unstack the odds for women and girls.
Walk Free publishes the Global Slavery Index (GSI), the world’s leading data set on modern slavery. The GSI measures prevalence, vulnerability and how governments around the world respond to modern slavery.
Walk Free also leads the Global Freedom Network, which is comprised of six national networks in Australia, India, Indonesia, Argentina, Colombia and New Zealand. The aim of these networks is to ensure faith communities, faith-based civil society organisations and youth have a clear understanding of modern slavery and its impact; and the tools to act in the most effective way.
Walk Free advocates for Modern Slavery Act Acts around the world through engagement with governments and partnership with business and civil society champions. They work with WikiRate and the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre to understand compliance under the UK’s Modern Slavery Act, reviewing modern slavery statements and creating tools for greater transparency for consumers, businesses, policymakers and civil society organisations.
Walk Free also provides secretariat support for Investors Against Slavery and Trafficking Asia Pacific (IAST APAC)—an investor-led, multi-stakeholder project established in 2020 to engage with companies in the Asia-Pacific region to promote effective action in finding, fixing and preventing modern slavery in operations and supply chains.
MISSION STATEMENT
Walk Free believes that a strong, multifaceted approach is needed to end modern slavery. Through a combination of direct implementation, grassroots community engagement, and working in partnership with faiths, businesses, academics, NGOs, and governments around the world, we work to address slavery and dismantle its core drivers.
