Overview
The Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF) is a global body that supports governments in advancing good mining governance for the betterment of communities, economies, and the environment. It serves as a unique platform for member countries to engage with one another and with international organizations, civil society, and the private sector to share knowledge and foster sustainable development in the extractive industries.
Mission and focus areas
The IGF helps governments strengthen their laws and policies to achieve short and long-term sustainable development goals. Key focus areas include gender equality, local content policies, mine closure and post-mining transition, artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM), environmental management, and financial benefits such as tax and revenue optimization.
Structure and governance
The IGF is a member-driven organization supported by a Secretariat funded by governments, including the Government of Canada. Its Annual General Meetings (AGM) are hosted by UN Trade and Development at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, providing a formal venue for international policy dialogue among member nations.
Programs and offerings
The IGF provides technical support, capacity building, and training workshops to its member countries. It offers specialized resources such as the Mining Fiscal Regime Simulator (MiFRS), strategic environmental assessments, and policy frameworks for mine closure. The organization also publishes research reports, commodity profile factsheets, and impact stories detailing its work in regions such as Southeast Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
