ICA’s primary focus is on fostering sustainable economic growth through member-driven enterprises that adhere to cooperative principles. These principles include democratic governance, member economic participation, and concern for community.
ICA’s key goals include enhancing the visibility and understanding of cooperatives, supporting the development of new cooperatives, and advocating for policies that favour cooperative enterprises. The organisation aims to create an enabling environment for cooperatives to thrive, thereby contributing to a more sustainable and inclusive global economy.
Structurally, ICA operates through a network of member organisations from various sectors and regions. This network allows for the exchange of knowledge, resources, and best practices among cooperatives globally. ICA is governed by a General Assembly, which includes representatives from its member organisations, and a Board of Directors elected by the Assembly. The organisation also has regional offices in Africa, the Americas, Asia-Pacific, and Europe to cater to the specific needs of cooperatives in these areas.
ICA promotes the cooperative model as a means of achieving long-term economic sustainability. Cooperatives are inherently focused on sustainable practices, given their emphasis on democratic decision-making and community wellbeing. ICA supports initiatives that integrate cooperative principles into sustainable finance frameworks, recognising the role of cooperatives in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
