2023 results and sector rankings
Highlights and key results: The report includes the top 300 cooperatives by turnover, totalling $2,409.41 billion USD in 2021, with agriculture and insurance sectors dominating. The top cooperative, Groupe Crédit Agricole, had a turnover of $117.01 billion USD and 147,000 employees.
Sector rankings: The rankings show agriculture and food industries leading with 105 cooperatives by turnover and 103 by GDP per capita. The financial service sector increased visibility in the GDP per capita ranking with 39 enterprises.
Cooperative member benefits
The report analyses how cooperatives and mutuals benefit their members. Key benefits include economic advantages like affordable prices, higher interest rates, and better income. Intangible benefits involve participation in decision-making and contributions to community projects. Large cooperatives emphasise their cooperative identity and values.
Top 300 rankings
Top 300 ranking by turnover with employment data: The top 10 cooperatives by turnover include Groupe Crédit Agricole, REWE Group, and Groupe BPCE. Employment data highlights the scale of these organisations, with REWE Group employing 257,996 individuals.
Top 300 ranking by turnover over GDP per capita: IFFCO and Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (AMUL) lead this ranking, reflecting significant contributions relative to their national economies.

Data for the 2023 edition was primarily sourced from annual and sustainability reports, existing databases, and national associations. The methodology ensures consistent and accurate data collection, focusing on economic and employment indicators.
