OVERVIEW
Overview
RTI International is an independent, non-profit scientific research institute established in 1958 in North Carolina, United States. Founded through collaboration between universities, government and business leaders, it was the first research organisation based in Research Triangle Park.
Its mission is to improve the human condition through scientific research and practical applications. RTI conducts multidisciplinary research for public institutions, businesses, foundations and other organisations internationally.
Mission and focus areas
RTI undertakes research across public health, education, environmental sciences, energy, international development, economic policy and advanced technologies. Its work combines scientific investigation, data analysis, programme evaluation and technical assistance to inform policy and organisational decisions.
Its sustainability-related activities include environmental protection, energy innovation, water management, climate-related research and sustainable development. These activities can inform ESG risk assessment, sustainability strategies and investment decisions, although RTI is not primarily a sustainable finance organisation.
Structure and governance
RTI operates as an independent non-profit institution governed by a Board of Governors, with oversight involving representatives from academia, business and other professional backgrounds. Executive leadership manages research programmes, organisational strategy and operations.
The institute is headquartered in Research Triangle Park and operates internationally through research teams and offices. Its activities are supported by research contracts and funding arrangements with government agencies, universities, foundations and commercial clients.
Programs and offerings
RTI provides applied research, statistical analysis, surveys, programme evaluations, laboratory services, engineering research and technical assistance. It also develops research technologies, analytical methods and evidence-based resources for public and private-sector applications.
Its outputs include research publications, policy analyses, datasets, technical reports and programme assessments. For finance and sustainability professionals, these resources can support environmental risk analysis, social impact assessment, policy research and evidence-based decision-making across sectors.
