OVERVIEW
Overview
SME Climate Hub is a non-profit global initiative that supports small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in taking meaningful climate action. It was established as a collaborative platform co-founded by the We Mean Business Coalition, the Exponential Roadmap Initiative, and the United Nations Climate Change High Level Champions’ Race to Zero campaign. SME Climate Hub provides a one-stop resource hub for SMEs to commit to science-aligned climate targets and access tools and guidance to reduce emissions.
Mission and focus areas
The organisation’s core mission is to help SMEs halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and achieve net zero emissions by 2050, aligning with global climate science and the Paris Agreement. It encourages SMEs to make a public climate commitment and supports them in measuring, reducing, and reporting emissions. SME Climate Hub focuses on climate action for business resilience, aligning with sustainable development goals and creating pathways for SMEs to contribute to global net-zero targets. Its thematic areas include emissions measurement, reporting, climate strategy implementation, and access to finance and resources for transition planning.
Structure and governance
SME Climate Hub operates as an initiative rather than a standalone corporation, managed through partnerships with global climate and business coalitions. While formal governance details such as a board or committee structure are not fully published on the public website, its leadership is anchored in collaborative partnerships. The initiative works closely with partner organisations and networks that support its mission, expanding reach and engagement with SMEs and stakeholders. Governing partners include key international climate actors aligned with the Race to Zero campaign.
Programs and offerings
The Hub provides a range of resources including free emissions measurement tools, educational materials, reporting frameworks, and case studies of SME climate action. Its flagship offering is the SME Climate Commitment framework, which guides SMEs through setting science-based climate targets and monitoring progress. The platform also offers tools for emissions reporting, guides to financing climate transition activities, and access to partner-developed resources to support implementation of climate strategies. These offerings help practitioners integrate sustainability into business operations and track progress.
MISSION STATEMENT
The SME Climate Hub aims to mainstream climate action for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), or companies with under 500 employees, and enable them to build resilient businesses for the future. Launched in 2020, the SME Climate Commitment is the official pathway for small and medium-sized businesses to join the global Race to Zero campaign.
