OVERVIEW
Overview
The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is a global environmental non-profit organisation founded in 1951 and headquartered in the United States. Its core purpose is to conserve lands and waters essential for life, guided by a mission to protect biodiversity and support a world where nature and people thrive.
Mission and focus areas
TNC focuses on conserving ecosystems through science-based strategies, including climate change mitigation, freshwater and marine protection, and land conservation. It works collaboratively with governments, businesses and communities to deliver nature-based solutions and sustainable resource management.
The organisation also engages in sustainable finance initiatives, such as impact investing through programs like NatureVest, which mobilise capital for conservation outcomes. These approaches support ESG integration by linking environmental protection with long-term economic value and risk management.
Structure and governance
TNC operates globally through regional affiliates and partnerships across more than 70 countries. Its governance is led by a Board of Directors supported by specialised committees covering finance, audit and conservation activities, alongside advisory councils.
The organisation employs scientists and practitioners who work across geographies, enabling decentralised but coordinated conservation efforts. Its collaborative model emphasises partnerships with public and private sector stakeholders.
Programs and offerings
TNC delivers a range of programs focused on large-scale conservation and ecosystem management, including initiatives addressing climate resilience, protected areas and biodiversity conservation. Flagship approaches such as “Conservation by Design” apply scientific analysis to prioritise and measure impact.
It also provides data tools, research, and investment mechanisms that support practitioners and finance professionals in evaluating nature-related risks and opportunities. These resources contribute to integrating environmental considerations into decision-making and sustainable finance strategies.
