Overview
En-ROADS is an online global climate simulation tool that models the impact of energy, land use, economic and policy decisions on greenhouse gas emissions and climate outcomes to 2100. It enables users to adjust variables and assess effects on factors such as temperatures, energy prices and air quality. Finance professionals may use it to support climate risk analysis, scenario modelling and long-term strategic planning.
Organisation behind the tool
The tool is developed and maintained by Climate Interactive in collaboration with the MIT Sloan School of Management’s System Dynamics Group and Sustainability Initiative and Ventana Systems. It is grounded in scientific research and calibrated against historical data and established climate models.
What the tool does
- Runs as a web-based, interactive climate simulator.
- Allows users to adjust policy levers (e.g. carbon pricing, electrification, energy efficiency, land use).
- Provides outputs on emissions trajectories, global temperature change, energy system shifts, air quality and sea level rise.
- Offers real-time visual feedback through graphs and charts as scenarios are modified.
- Includes assumptions views and scenario comparison features for detailed exploration.
- Can be used in facilitated workshops or individually online.
Target audience
The primary intended users are policymakers and educators. Other relevant audiences include businesses, researchers, sustainability professionals, risk analysts and the general public interested in climate policy outcomes.
Relevance to finance professionals
- Risk assessment – Helps assess exposure to physical and transition climate risks under different policy scenarios.
- ESG analysis – Produces environmental metrics useful for reporting and scenario disclosures.
- Market/commodity insights – Provides insight into long-term energy price trajectories and demand shifts for commodities.
- Investment context – Supports exploration of long-term climate and economic trends under varied policy and technology pathways.
