OVERVIEW
The State of Finance for Nature series, initiated in 2021, tracks global financial flows to nature-based solutions (NbS). The series aims to evaluate current investments and the financing gap needed to address environmental challenges such as biodiversity loss, land degradation, and climate change. It provides insights into both public and private financial contributions towards NbS while also identifying nature-negative financial flows that contribute to environmental degradation.
The purpose of this series is to guide finance professionals, policymakers, and businesses in aligning financial flows with nature-positive outcomes. The methodology includes analysing public and private sector data to assess financial flows directed towards NbS and those harmful to nature. The series evaluates the current levels of investment, comparing them with what is required to meet global environmental goals, particularly the Rio Convention targets.
Finance professionals can use this series to understand how finance is being directed towards sustainable practices and to identify areas where funding can be redirected from nature-negative activities to NbS. This provides a framework for aligning investments with environmental goals, creating opportunities for sustainable financial strategies.
