The Board Diversity Index is a benchmark series initiated in 2015 by Watermark Search International in collaboration with the Governance Institute of Australia. It provides an annual analysis of the composition of boards across ASX300 listed companies, examining various aspects of diversity beyond gender alone.
This series evaluates diversity across a range of attributes including cultural background, skills and experience, age, tenure, and director independence. Its purpose is to present a comprehensive view of who holds directorships in Australia’s top listed companies and how board demographics evolve over time.
The methodology involves collecting publicly reported data as of 1 January each year from all ASX300 boards. A consistent approach is applied year-on-year, with refinements to categories and definitions to improve clarity and data comparability. Directors’ primary qualifications and dominant career backgrounds are assessed, alongside indicators such as independence and cultural identification, based on accessible sources.
Finance professionals can use this benchmark to understand trends in boardroom diversity and evaluate governance practices in listed companies. The Index supports due diligence, ESG assessments, and comparative reviews across sectors or peer companies, aiding investment and advisory decisions.
The report forms part of a broader effort to enhance transparency and accountability in corporate governance in Australia.
