OVERVIEW
The Mindful Money Fund Checker is a free online tool that enables New Zealand investors to check and compare KiwiSaver and managed funds based on their underlying investments and issues of concern. Using publicly available data and analytics, the tool reveals the companies that funds are investing in, helping users identify whether their fund aligns with their values. The tool covers a broad range of funds across major New Zealand KiwiSaver providers.
Organisation behind the tool
The tool is developed and maintained by Mindful Money, a New Zealand organisation focused on responsible investment. Barry Coates is the founder and chief executive of Mindful Money.
What the tool does
Users can select one or multiple funds from a comprehensive list of KiwiSaver and managed funds and explore the companies those funds are invested in. The tool highlights “Issues of Concern” — areas that members of the New Zealand public want to avoid, drawn from Mindful Money’s Annual Surveys. Data is sourced from the NZ Companies Office and from Mindful Money’s own portfolio analysis. Users can also access an ethical fund finder to identify funds that align with their values.
Target audience
The primary audience is New Zealand retail investors, particularly those enrolled in KiwiSaver schemes who wish to understand the ethical dimensions of their fund choices. The tool is also relevant to financial advisers assisting clients with values-based investment decisions.
Relevance to finance professionals
The tool provides transparency into fund holdings relevant to ESG screening and responsible investment analysis. It supports values-based financial advice by enabling comparison of funds against specific ethical concerns, and assists in identifying funds that meet socially responsible investment criteria within the New Zealand market.
