OVERVIEW
The Adaptation Toolbox is a suite of three digital tools designed to help companies navigate the complexities of physical climate risk and build long-term resilience. Developed by The Adaptation Exchange, it provides a structured pathway for organisations to assess their preparedness, quantify the business case for adaptation, and identify specific technical solutions. It is particularly relevant for finance and sustainability professionals seeking to move beyond climate risk disclosure toward practical investment and operational planning.
Organisation behind the tool
The toolbox was developed by The Adaptation Exchange through three collaborative working groups. These groups comprised over 30 member organisations, including banks, insurers, manufacturers, and logistics firms. The initiative is operated and hosted by DSR Partners GmbH (also referred to as DSR & Partners – Climate Adaptation Advisory), a Germany-based consultancy.
What the tool does
The toolbox consists of three interconnected modules:
- Climate Resilience Maturity Assessment: A 27-question diagnostic that evaluates an organisation's preparedness across seven dimensions, including governance and value chain management.
- Business Case Tool: A financial calculator that uses five data points from an annual report to estimate required capital and operational expenditure for adaptation, alongside expected returns across eight value levers.
- Adaptation Stack: A searchable database of over 250 solutions and providers, filterable by climate risk (e.g. heat, flooding, wildfire) and value chain position.
Target audience
The primary users are corporate sustainability, risk management, and operations teams. The Business Case module specifically targets finance teams and Chief Financial Officers to validate adaptation investments, while the Adaptation Stack is designed for procurement and site-level managers.
Relevance to finance professionals
- Risk assessment – Helps translate physical climate hazards (flooding, drought, storms) into organisational maturity scores and priority gaps.
- ESG analysis – Provides a shared language for internal reporting on climate adaptation beyond simple disclosure.
- Investment context – Offers a standardised framework to calculate CapEx and OpEx for resilience measures, facilitating integration into formal budget cycles.
- Market/commodity insights – Enables users to identify specific technology providers and solution categories relevant to protecting physical assets and supply chains.
