Overview

The Global Landscape of Climate Finance is a benchmark series produced by Climate Policy Initiative (CPI) to track and assess global climate finance. Initiated in 2011, the series provides a consistent framework for understanding how finance is directed towards climate change mitigation, adaptation and resilience.

Purpose

The series aims to provide a global baseline for understanding where and how climate finance flows. It supports assessment of progress in financing climate objectives and provides information on the sources, intermediaries, financial instruments, uses, sectors and geographic distribution of climate-related investment.

Methodology

CPI tracks primary investment in productive assets at the project level that targets climate-specific outcomes. This approach is designed to avoid double counting by excluding secondary transactions and certain instruments or intermediate investments where inclusion could overstate project investment.

The methodology draws on consistently reported and collected data from public and private sources. Finance is classified across dimensions including public and private actors, financial instruments, mitigation and adaptation uses, sectors, and geographic flows. The series also identifies areas where data availability or reporting methodologies limit coverage.

Finance professionals can use the benchmark series to understand the structure and direction of climate finance across markets, sectors, instruments and sources of capital.
