OVERVIEW
This interactive portal was developed by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) in collaboration with WetterOnline Meteorologische Dienstleistungen GmbH, under the “Climate Impact Expert System” (CIES) project, with support from the Umweltbundesamt.
The tool illustrates how climate change may affect sectors including climate, agriculture, forestry, water, energy, tourism and health for Germany, and extends to regions such as the Sahel, Central Asia, India, Peru, the Amazon, Ethiopia, Jordan and Europe. Users can explore parameters such as temperature, crop yields and forest-fire risk via colour maps based on historical (1901–2010) and simulated (2011–2100) data, with multiple RCP scenario projections.
The portal serves researchers, policymakers, educators and the general public. It also includes adaptations for school and vocational training through projects like PIKee and PIKeeBB.
Relevance to finance professionals
KlimafolgenOnline aids finance professionals in assessing sectoral and regional climate-related risks. It supports investment analysis by offering scenario-based projections on crop yields, energy potential, water stress and health impacts. This informs climate-resilient planning, project appraisals and adaptation investment strategies. Reliable, spatially detailed climate data support scenario analysis and stress-testing of portfolios exposed to environmental risks.
