OVERVIEW
Overview
The Clean Investment Monitor: US Update is a research benchmark series and database that tracks the manufacture and deployment of technologies aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions within the United States. This report is a joint project produced by the Rhodium Group and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research (MIT-CEEPR). It provides a detailed quarterly analysis of investment activities across three primary segments: Manufacturing, Energy and Industry, and Retail. The series covers a wide range of clean energy and transportation sectors, including zero-emission vehicles, renewable electricity generation, and industrial decarbonisation.
Purpose
This report exists to offer a comprehensive and methodologically consistent framework for tracking real-world investment in clean technologies. It is designed to inform decision-makers in both the public and private sectors by providing objective, data-driven insights into the pace and scale of the transition to a low-carbon economy. By monitoring investment trends, the report helps stakeholders understand how federal policies, such as tax credits, and market conditions are influencing the deployment of clean energy solutions. It aims to bridge the gap between high-level policy goals and actual capital expenditure on the ground.
Methodology
The analysis is carried out using a detailed database that organises clean investment into three distinct segments. The Manufacturing segment covers investments in the production of greenhouse gas emission-reducing technologies, such as batteries and solar components. The Energy and Industry segment focuses on the deployment of these technologies to produce clean energy or to decarbonise industrial processes. The Retail segment tracks the purchase and installation of technologies by individual households and businesses, such as heat pumps and electric vehicles. The methodology relies on facility-level data and tracks actual capital expenditures invested over construction timelines once projects break ground. For retail products, it uses actual investment figures based on real dollars spent in a given quarter.
Use for finance professionals
Finance professionals can utilise this report to gain a granular understanding of investment flows into various clean technology sectors. The quarterly data allows for the identification of emerging trends and growth areas, such as the significant rise in residential battery storage or shifts in zero-emission vehicle sales. It also provides critical information on project health by tracking both new announcements and project cancellations, which is vital for assessing market sentiment and risk. Furthermore, the report’s focus on the impact of federal tax credit eligibility deadlines provides a temporal framework for anticipating shifts in investment patterns for utility-scale solar and wind projects. By accessing the associated facility-level metadata, professionals can conduct more detailed regional and sectoral risk assessments.
